Goldfinch

In 2013, with a love of textiles and a background in fashion and interior design, a creative adventure began into a world of natural fibers, slow production and exotic locales. We travelled to find sources in Nepal and Mexico--places where making things by hand is still a way of life--and found artisans dedicated to the old, time-consuming processes of dyeing, weaving and hand-finishing. We're continually thrilled to find that this wealth of skill, knowledge and patience is alive, well and practiced daily. Our collection incorporates these fine skills, then we add in a bit of modern technology and are continually inspired knowing that the design possibilities are endless.

Debra Herdman, designer/owner

I'm also an interior designer, www.debraherdmandesign.com and using wonderful textiles in my interior projects has always been one of my strong suits. My career has spanned interior design, fashion design, art direction and product design. I've always made things by hand and at age 11 started sewing clothes for myself, my mom, rock bands and friends. From there I experimented with many crafts--knitting, macrame, tie-dye, block printing, embroidery and painting on fabric. I utilized much of this background when I founded my first textile company, modern linen industrie, in 1993 and all of these past textile experiences have led me to Goldfinch.

Planning and working in gardens is my favorite pastime. I love to watch things grow and develop, which must be why I have an entrepreneurial spirit! I'm inspired by other cultures, travel as much as I can to learn about the world and I'm currently learning to speak Spanish.
